5 Ways to Actively Seek God in Your Daily Life

We’ve all seen the coffee mugs that declare, “All I need are coffee and Jesus.” While I used to bristle at the sentiment because I thought Jesus should be enough on His own, this phrase speaks to the simple and daily necessity of pursuing God through everyday moments.

If we, as busy women, want to pursue God actively, we have to discover ways to turn our routine moments into opportunities for spiritual growth and connection.

Each day is full of tasks that we do without even thinking. If we can weave our faith into these moments, then we can create habits of spiritual growth as we regularly connect with Jesus.

  1. Get Ready With Jesus

Simple daily moments can become liturgies. Every morning, you most likely shower, brush your teeth, do your hair, possibly apply make-up and get dressed. God understood this concept when he instructed us to “Put on the full armor of God” and to “Put on love.” Why not tape scripture to your mirror or write it with a whiteboard pen? Practice memorizing and meditating on and praying through this scripture as you get ready each morning. Change the scripture out weekly or monthly to keep your growth progressing.

For example, you might tape up Psalm 90:14, “Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days” (NIV). After reading the verse a few times and working on memorization, dwell on each part of it. Consider its meaning and implications for your life. Ask yourself questions such as, “Do I feel satisfied with Jesus? Do I feel joy?” Then, turn to prayer and ask the Lord to satisfy you and fill your day with joy despite the challenges that might arise.

  1. Chore-Time With Jesus

A woman’s day undoubtedly involves some chores—dishes, laundry, yard work, cleaning out the car, cooking, and more. When your hands are busy, this is an excellent time to listen to scripture, podcasts, or spiritual books. Take this time to fill your mind and heart with spiritual truths. This would be an excellent opportunity to listen through the entire Bible or to find books on areas of spiritual growth applicable to your life.

Consider podcasts such as The Elisabeth Elliott Podcast or Sheologians, or books like Jerry Bridges, Respectable Sins or Ruth Chou Simons, Now and Not Yet. You could even listen to missionary biographies to spur you on in your walk. This would definitely help you to complete your chores “without grumbling or complaining” (Philippians 2:14 NIV).

  1. Car Rides With Jesus

Many days require a ride in the car to pick up kids and groceries or to complete other errands. Consider car rides your worship time. Play hymns, praise music, or anything that points your heart to Christ and fills your mind with His word. Many musical groups put scripture to music to help with your memorization. Play some scripture songs, try to learn a few hymns during this time, and encourage your heart with more contemporary tunes.

Some excellent resources are Seeds Family Worship, Getty Family Hymnal, City Alight, and Lenanna Crawford, which fulfills the command to talk of God’s goodness while you “walk by the way,” as Deuteronomy 6:7 says. However, in our modern world, we are often driving rather than walking.

  1. Mealtime With Jesus

Whether you are eating with the family or alone, take time to connect to the Lord in prayer before each meal. These three moments of necessary pause each day are a perfect opportunity to slow down and connect with your Lord. Check-in with Him about your day and realign your priorities and feelings. If you are eating alone, this could be an excellent time to journal your thoughts, feelings, or prayers.

Even if your family is present, this is an excellent opportunity to institute some family devotions while everyone is sitting and busy eating.

Remember that God cares about our food and understands our need for it. The Bible is filled with food and feasting imagery. Mealtimes can be dedicated to the Lord.

  1. Wind Down With Jesus

Each day has a wind-down routine that can involve many different duties or pleasurable activities. Perhaps you like to reset your kitchen, go over your planner, take a bath, walk the dog, read a book, or do a beauty routine or exercise. Whatever you do, consider how you can connect with the Lord. I suggest selecting something that you always do, such as brushing your teeth and getting into bed.

Look at the same verse you posted on your mirror. Read it again, think back over your day, and evaluate it. Discuss it with the Lord. Confess anything from the day, and thank God for His blessings. Choose one of the many scriptures about sleep as your evening prayer as you finally reach your pillow.

Marking your regular routines with scripture, prayer, and spiritual encouragement will tighten your bond with the Lord and bring your heart into closer communion with Him. When you add spiritual moments to habits you already possess, they will be much easier to maintain, and the fruit will appear much more quickly.
