With World Mental Health Day in October, it is important to acknowledge the specific exhaustion that many of us carry. Some days stretch beyond the everyday busyness and are genuinely hard.
We feel we are struggling and getting nowhere. We wonder why we are not succeeding, where our peace has gone, or whether we will ever feel it again. How can we find steadiness when everything feels so heavy?
Scripture can offer practical steps to find solid ground on a shaken day. By rooting our peace in Scripture, we can find help for days that feel like a stormy sea.
The first step is to rely on God’s Word. Speak Scripture over your situations and circumstances. God’s Word is robust, varied, and detailed. It speaks to all that we experience, good and bad.
Combat the difficulties of the day with truth. Your difficulties will make you doubt, fear, and worry, and you begin to believe the lies that your discouraged heart tells you. Satan wants us discouraged and will attack us in any way he can.
Difficulty may seem to land on top of difficulty until we can see no way out. Jeremiah 17:9 reminds us that “the heart is deceitful above all things” (NIV), but John 17:17 assures us that His “word is truth” (NIV). Scripture can help us combat the emotions that arise from exhaustion.
To do this in practice, keep a Bible open on the counter to a key passage of encouragement. Turn on a playlist of Scripture set to music. Place verses around the house that address issues that often come up on difficult days.
The next step is to remember that you were never designed to do it all on your own in the first place. Some days this is clearer than others, and that can be a good thing. It can send us back to the Lord for help, refuge, and support.
Isaiah 41:10 tells us, “I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you” (NIV). This gives rest as we realize that we are not alone in hard seasons and difficult days. God promises again and again to be with us, fight for us, supply our needs, work through us, and change us.
When everything feels too heavy, ask for His help, call on His promises, and rest in the reality that His burden is light (Matthew 11:30). Let go of whatever He is not asking of you.
To remind yourself of God’s strength, stop and take a breath when you feel overwhelmed. Ask God to step in and help you, then return to the problem if necessary.
When the day feels difficult, pause and ask yourself which priorities God would have you address first. You might realize that you can let some things go and ease your burden. Play encouraging music about God’s power and strength to remind yourself that you are not alone.
1 Peter 5:7 reminds us to “cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you” (NIV). We aren’t meant to carry discouragement, worry, and anxiety alone. Our thoughts affect our bodies and our overall well-being, which can impact those around us.
God doesn’t promise to remove our trials, but He does promise to give us peace in them. We must fight for this peace. The waves of our trials may threaten to overwhelm us, but God can calm them. His presence can turn a storm into a still sea.
So when exhaustion threatens to sink you, reach out to God. Stay connected to Him. Pray. Confess. Lament. Praise. Ask.
To practice this step, set prayer reminders on your phone to develop the habit of seeking the Lord’s presence at regular intervals. Listen to prayer podcasts or Scripture playlists throughout the day. Read a prayer or poem about God’s character when you don’t feel you can go on. These pauses in His presence will bring peace amid difficulties.
Exhaustion and difficult days can wear us down mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. However, we don’t have to stay there. Biblical practices can help us keep our heads above water. Scripture is the life vest that keeps us afloat when we feel ourselves drifting.
Peace doesn’t come from our circumstances, but from the Lord. His peace is not dependent on our days or our abilities. It is dependent only on Him, the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).
Even when everything is going wrong, and our trials are deep and dark, He is not daunted. His truth is our anchor, His strength is our support, and His presence is our peace.
